Wimbledon Introduces Video Review System in 2025.

Wimbledon court with video review system

The tournament joins the American and Aussie Opens in utilizing replay technology.

Video review technology are set to arrive at The Championships in the upcoming tournament.

Competitors will gain the option to question certain calls made by the chair umpire, following the system already in use at both the US Open and the Australian Open.

This technology will be accessible on Centre Court and the number one court for the duration of the tournament and on the remaining featured courts when they are staging singles matches.

This move arrives only a year after the All England Club rolled out electronic line calling, which brought an end to the centuries-old role of line judges.

Scope of Challenges

Competitors cannot to dispute the call of the ELC system, but are allowed to request the umpire to review other situations, including:

  • Whether a ball has bounced twice.
  • If a ball touched an opponent's racquet or body on the way past.
  • Potential hindrance at the conclusion of a point.

Importantly, there is an unlimited number on the amount of challenges a competitor can ask for.

Practical Application

A recent incident occurred in a recent tournament last week, where a top player initiated the review system against Jack Draper.

The British player admitted it was a difficult situation for the umpire, but believed his opponent had "played the rules effectively."

Official Aurelie Tourte watched a video and determined Draper was responsible for hindrance, granting the rally to his opponent.

Growing Trend

This technology aren't exclusive to Grand Slams. The system was adopted at the US Open for two years and the Aussie Open since 2025.

Furthermore, it is increasingly prevalent on the WTA circuit, and by the coming year the ATP circuit plans to have video reviews in place at every one of its events.

Further Updates

Another change at Wimbledon this year will be the introduction of graphical cues on scoreboards to complement the verbal announcements from the electronic line calling system.

This addresses instances where the crowd have sometimes been uncertain whether a ball was out or in.

Finally, with precisely a century of days to go until the start of the tournament, organizers have further revealed an increase in daily attendance at the qualifiers in the qualifying venue.
