Australia's captain Poised for a Major Role in Iconic Rivalry

Pat Cummins bowling

The pace bowler has taken 309 wickets in 71 five-day games with an stellar bowling average.

The Australian selection chief Bailey has confirmed that captain Pat Cummins will be a central figure in the forthcoming England-Australia contest.

Rumors had circulated that Cummins might be unavailable due to a persistent back stress problem that was still troubling him.

Initial reports from the Australian camp suggested no definitive call had been made regarding Cummins' participation, with the extended contest set to start on the 21st of November in Western Australia.

Bailey expressed that the captain is progressing and remained hopeful about his chances of participating.

"We're aware that the window is narrowing and multiple considerations around that, aside from the physical problem, but other factors as well," he commented.

"It's positive. There's strong faith that he'll participate in a key capacity. Ideally starting in Perth. Should that not happen, then we'll pick it up."

Injury History

He was sidelined the ODI and T20 games against India and New Zealand recently after examinations confirmed a lower back issue.

He has a history of recurring issues, with setbacks in multiple past seasons leading to absences from three Australian summers in four years.

Cummins stated he would be ""aggressive" and "take risks" in his rehabilitation process to secure his spot for the Ashes.

The selector indicated that it was unclear if the captain had resumed bowling as part of his comeback but admitted it was "pressing" for him to regain fitness for the opener.

Alternative Arrangements

Should Cummins not be fit, veteran batsman Smith will assume leadership.

Versatile player Green was recently pulled out from the national team for their ODI contests against India as a preventive step because of soreness in his side.

He labeled it as a "slight concern and confirmed that Green will play in the Sheffield Shield, so will be "in a good place to resume bowling."

"Extensive planning has gone into creating the schedule for him to take part for the first Test as an batting and bowling option," Bailey explained.

"Originally, he'd only feature in the initial matches anyway. How he handles the bat in limited-overs, if it causes any delay for a short period, the choice was made to adopt a safer strategy."
